SkyeChip originated in 2019 following a successful trade mission from Malaysia to China. During the visit, Chinese industry leaders expressed interest in diversifying their sources of silicon technology due to trade restrictions imposed by the US. This led to the inception of SkyeChip, aiming to bridge the gap in the market for advanced hardware solutions.
Although the MARS1000 is not expected to be produced in Malaysia, the country’s expertise in ATMP services positions it as a crucial player in the global semiconductor supply chain. With strong government support, Malaysia serves as a strategic intermediary facilitating the exchange of silicon products and intellectual property between East and West.
In line with its commitment to fostering technological advancement, the Malaysian government introduced the National Semiconductor Strategy in May 2024. This initiative offers incentives to attract investments in the semiconductor sector, aiming to cultivate an ecosystem conducive to innovation and commercialization of cutting-edge technologies.
SkyeChip’s leadership team comprises industry veterans, including Swee Kiang Fong and The Chee Hak, bringing a wealth of experience from top tech companies like Altera, Broadcom, and Intel. Their combined expertise positions SkyeChip as a key player in meeting the growing demand for advanced semiconductor solutions.
Speaking about the market potential in China, Fong highlighted the opportunity for Malaysia to become a neutral provider of essential hardware solutions. With US tariffs impacting market dynamics, the MARS1000 is poised to attract buyers seeking alternatives to Western suppliers, making China a key target market for SkyeChip.
Despite its focus on AI applications, the MARS1000’s versatility extends to scenarios where FPGAs and ASICs are also utilized, particularly in edge computing environments where parallel processing capabilities are valued.
