The US House of Representatives China Committee Investigates Nvidia

The US House of Representatives China committee has initiated an inquiry into Nvidia’s dealings with Chinese company DeepSeek, raising concerns about the potential national security risks posed by the use of export-controlled chips in DeepSeek’s artificial intelligence application.

John Moolenaar, the Republican chair of the committee, along with his Democratic counterpart Raja Krishnamoorthi, have written to Nvidia seeking clarification on the sales of their technology to China and south-east Asia.

The committee’s scrutiny follows a report highlighting the perceived threat posed by DeepSeek, which reportedly utilized Nvidia chips in its AI model, raising alarms about potential espionage and technology theft.

Moolenaar condemned DeepSeek as a tool of the Chinese Communist party, designed to undermine US interests and compromise national security.

Nvidia Faces Allegations of Selling Export-Controlled Chips to China

Nvidia has vehemently denied any wrongdoing, asserting that they comply with all government regulations and restrictions on the sale of their technology. The company refutes claims that their advanced chips have been unlawfully sold to China.

The recent export controls imposed on Nvidia’s H20 chips have further intensified the scrutiny on the company, leading to concerns about the integrity of its supply chain and distribution network.

Nvidia’s reliance on a network of partners and subsidiaries has raised questions about the potential access to export-controlled chips by entities in China and other regions.

DeepSeek’s Controversial Data Practices Under Scrutiny

The congressional report highlighted DeepSeek’s data transmission methods, connecting it to Chinese telecom giant China Mobile and other tech companies with alleged ties to the Chinese government.

DeepSeek’s integration of tracking tools from Chinese tech giants like ByteDance and Baidu has raised concerns about data privacy and potential surveillance activities.

The report’s findings have sparked debates about the implications of tech innovation and data security in the context of US-China relations.

Conclusion

As the investigation into Nvidia and DeepSeek continues, the implications for US-China relations and national security remain a topic of intense debate. Stay informed on the latest developments by subscribing to our White House Watch newsletter for exclusive insights and analysis.
