WhatsApp Surpasses 3 Billion Monthly Users, Becoming a Key Platform for Meta
Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced during the Q1 results conference call that WhatsApp now boasts over 3 billion monthly users. Acquired by Facebook in 2014 for $19 billion, WhatsApp remains ad-free and free to use. The app hit the 2 billion monthly active user milestone in 2020 and has now joined the elite club of apps with over 3 billion users, alongside Facebook.
With its massive user base, WhatsApp plays a crucial role for Meta, particularly as the company focuses on its AI strategy. Meta has highlighted that WhatsApp is a major distribution platform for its AI services, with CFO Susan Li noting that most users engage with Meta AI through one-on-one chats on the app.
Zuckerberg explained that while WhatsApp facilitates easy access to AI features, Meta is taking a different approach to drive adoption of its AI products in markets like the U.S. where stock messaging apps are still prevalent. This is where Meta’s newly launched Meta AI app comes into play.
Meta aims to establish itself as the primary personal AI provider in the U.S. messaging market through the Meta AI app. However, the company plans to enhance AI experiences across various platforms globally to maintain its leadership position.
Meta reported that WhatsApp Business, the app’s business platform, is experiencing growth and contributed significantly to the $510 million revenue generated by Meta’s family of apps.
AI Integration and Expansion Efforts for WhatsApp Business
Meta has been testing AI tools for WhatsApp Business, with plans to introduce a new AI agent management interface and dashboard. This interface will enable businesses to train Meta’s AI using their data, such as website content, WhatsApp profiles, and social media pages on Instagram and Facebook. Additionally, Meta is experimenting with the integration of AI chatbots in customer interactions on the platform.
