Yelp Introduces AI-Powered Voice Agents to Assist Service Providers
Yelp announced a new initiative on Tuesday, revealing plans to integrate AI-powered “voice agents” to support service providers and restaurants in managing calls, addressing common inquiries, and completing tasks such as adding customers to waitlists.
The technology implemented by Yelp does not necessitate complex setups or API integrations. Instead, it leverages existing metadata and business data, including pronunciation guides, personalized voice greetings, and call forwarding protocols. For instance, when interacting with a restaurant, Yelp’s voice agents can interface with the establishment’s management software to transmit reservation details to customers following a call.
In addition to basic functions, Yelp’s voice agents are equipped to handle tasks like automatic spam filtering and call analytics. For more intricate requests, the agents can seamlessly transfer the conversation to a human representative. After each call, businesses receive a comprehensive summary, transcript, and recording for reference.
Yelp’s Chief Product Officer, Craig Saldanha, emphasized the importance of assisting professionals who may be unable to answer calls due to challenging circumstances. By introducing this product, Yelp aims to capitalize on potential leads that might otherwise be missed.
Saldanha revealed that Yelp is utilizing OpenAI’s Realtime API to facilitate end-to-end calling functionalities. This integration enables Yelp’s agents to engage in interactive conversations by utilizing the company’s knowledge graph to pose and respond to follow-up questions.
The company is committed to continuously evaluating new models to enhance the performance of its products in terms of latency, speech recognition accuracy, and overall customer satisfaction.
Saldanha expressed his belief that voice technology will become standardized in the future, with the key differentiator being the quality of underlying data and AI’s ability to address customer queries effectively. He asserted that Yelp possesses a competitive advantage in these areas.
