Reversing Trends: The Rise of Dedicated Servers in a Cloud-First World
According to a recent survey, the assumption that cloud is always the end goal is being challenged as more IT professionals are turning to dedicated servers for their organizations. This shift is driven by concerns about cost predictability, control, and performance in shared cloud environments.
The Continued Importance of Dedicated Servers
The survey revealed that 86% of IT professionals currently use dedicated servers, with industries such as government, information technology, and finance leading the way. A significant 53% of IT professionals still consider dedicated servers essential, with almost half expecting the role of dedicated servers to grow by 2030. The majority of respondents use dedicated servers for databases, file storage, and web hosting.
Challenges and Opportunities for IT Professionals
One interesting finding from the survey is that 32% of IT professionals believe their current cloud spend is wasted on features or capacity they don’t fully utilize. This highlights the need for more customization options from cloud service providers. Additionally, on-premises computing is on the rise, with 34% of respondents reporting increased spending on dedicated servers in 2024 compared to previous years.
IT managers are facing challenges in explaining the value of dedicated infrastructure to non-technical leadership. Many feel that executive leadership underestimates the role dedicated servers play in a modern tech stack. Despite these challenges, the survey indicates a growing recognition of the importance of dedicated servers in today’s IT landscape.
