Rackspace Technology’s Bold Commitment to Sustainable Energy Solutions

Rackspace Technology, a leader in hybrid cloud and AI solutions, has reached a significant achievement by receiving approval from the Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi) for its emissions reduction targets. These goals, in line with the global aim to limit warming to 1.5°C, involve reducing emissions by 50% by 2032 and 90% by 2045, with the ultimate goal of achieving net-zero carbon emissions. By setting ambitious targets for 2023, Rackspace establishes itself as a frontrunner in the cloud services sector.

Rackspace Technology, a prominent player in the realm of hybrid cloud and AI solutions, has recently been granted approval by the Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi) for its emissions reduction objectives. These targets, designed to align with the global goal of restricting warming to 1.5°C, entail a 50% reduction in emissions by 2032 and a 90% reduction by 2045, ultimately aiming for net-zero carbon emissions. With these ambitious targets set for 2023, Rackspace solidifies its position as a leader in the domain of cloud services.

A key factor influencing this decision was the acknowledgment of the surge in energy demands driven primarily by artificial intelligence. It is projected that data centers will witness a twofold increase in energy consumption by 2030. As a result, companies face mounting pressure from regulations, like the EU’s Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive, to openly disclose and mitigate emissions.

Presently, Rackspace powers approximately 80% of its global data centers with renewable energy and strives to achieve 100% renewable integration through strategic partnerships. This initiative is in line with Rackspace’s dedication to constructing a sustainable digital infrastructure that aids customers in achieving their sustainability objectives.

Srini Koushik, President AI, Technology, and Sustainability at Rackspace Technology, expressed, “SBTi’s validation of our net-zero targets marks a significant milestone in Rackspace’s decarbonization journey. Cloud services and digital infrastructure play a vital role in organizations’ supply chain and Scope 3 emissions. By establishing and progressing towards aggressive sustainability goals, we not only reduce our environmental impact but also assist our customers in reaching their goals without compromising performance.”

Ben Blanquera, VP of Technology and Sustainability at Rackspace Technology, added, “We understand that embedding efficiency into our operations and throughout our global footprint will positively impact our customers’ ability to fulfill their sustainability targets. By committing to these rigorous SBTi-validated targets, we establish a framework for substantial emissions reductions and underscore our commitment to acting as an environmentally responsible partner for our stakeholders, partners, and clients.”

The company’s Workload Aware Modernization program serves as a prime example of its proactive stance. It aids clients in identifying redundant cloud resources and progressing towards eco-friendly cloud architectures. Through the adoption of serverless computing, cloud-native solutions, and automated resource management, Rackspace facilitates significant cost savings and environmental impact reductions.
