As a result, JUPITER has earned the title of the world’s most energy-efficient supercomputer module, leading the pack on the Green500 list.

The exascale capabilities of JUPITER are poised to revolutionize European scientific research and policymaking. Researchers will now have the ability to conduct climate and weather simulations at a kilometer-scale resolution, enhancing the accuracy of forecasts for extreme events like floods, storms, and heatwaves. Furthermore, JUPITER’s computational power opens up new possibilities in physics, medicine, and materials science, enabling breakthrough discoveries that were previously unattainable.
Driving Europe’s AI future
Beyond its impact on research, JUPITER will play a crucial role in shaping Europe’s artificial intelligence landscape. The supercomputer is a key component of the AI Factory (JAIF) initiative, which aims to train advanced large language models for generative AI applications. These efforts align with the EU’s strategy to establish AI gigafactories, dedicated to fostering cutting-edge AI systems in an energy-efficient manner.
A €500m European investment
The €500 million JUPITER project represents a collaborative investment by the European Union and Germany through the EuroHPC Joint Undertaking. This substantial funding has already supported 13 proposals for AI Factories across Europe, with a growing demand evidenced by 76 expressions of interest from 16 Member States by mid-2025. These Gigafactories will serve as hubs for innovation, combining computing power, data, and talent to position Europe as a frontrunner in AI development and deployment.
