Seagate Invests £115 Million in Nano-Photonic Research and Development

Seagate has recently announced a substantial investment of £115 million towards advancing nano-photonic research and development at its Derry/Londonderry site. The funding, with £100 million from Seagate and £15 million from Invest NI, aims to boost the company’s hard drive technology to meet the growing demand for data storage worldwide.

Accelerating Technology for AI Workloads

The five-year investment program is focused on enhancing Seagate’s hard drive technology to cater to the increasing data storage needs driven by hyperscale data centers and AI workloads. This initiative is expected to create highly skilled job opportunities and boost local supply-chain activities in Northern Ireland.

Invest NI Backs Seagate’s Innovation Plans

Invest NI, the economic development agency in the region, has been a long-standing supporter of Seagate’s operations in Northern Ireland. The agency is collaborating with Seagate on this project to develop new recording heads and laser technology, positioning Northern Ireland at the forefront of the company’s innovation plans.

Overall, this investment will not only strengthen Seagate’s global engineering expertise but also enhance local capabilities in photonics and advanced manufacturing. Through partnerships with academic institutions and industry collaborations, Seagate aims to drive innovation and maintain its leadership in technology and manufacturing excellence.
