Dr. Tom Kelly, a trauma surgeon, is deeply concerned about the overwhelming administrative burden faced by doctors in healthcare settings. To address this issue, he embarked on a mission to develop a solution that could revolutionize the industry.
“We aimed to create an AI care partner that could support clinicians by managing administrative tasks, allowing healthcare providers like myself to focus on delivering quality care,” he shared with TechCrunch.
Teaming up with Waleed Mussa, his former colleague from a previous startup, Dr. Kelly established Heidi Health in 2021. The company rolled out its innovative products in early 2024.
Within a short span of 18 months, Heidi Health claims to have reclaimed over “18 million hours for frontline healthcare professionals from 70 million patient encounters across 116 countries.”
The flagship offering from Heidi Health is an AI-powered medical scribe that handles administrative duties that typically burden physicians. This tool can transcribe notes, create personalized patient summaries, and manage tasks, eliminating the need for manual reminders.
Heidi Health has developed its proprietary AI model while leveraging existing models like Gemini. Dr. Kelly emphasized the importance of this model-agnostic approach for optimizing accuracy, efficiency, and cost-effectiveness.
Recently, the company secured a significant $65 million Series B funding round led by Steve Cohen’s Point72. Additionally, Heidi Health introduced a new AI agent that can make calls to patients on behalf of doctors. Dr. Simon Kos, formerly of Microsoft, and Paul Williamson from Plaid have joined the team.
To date, Heidi Health has raised a total of $96.6 million, with contributions from investors such as Goodwater Capital, Headline, Blackbird VC, LG Technology Ventures, and Alumni Ventures.
Dr. Kelly highlighted Point72’s interest in Heidi Health, noting their appreciation for the product adoption and user engagement metrics. He emphasized the company’s commitment to enhancing the end-user experience, unlike competitors focused solely on sales strategies.
The fresh funding will primarily support ongoing product development efforts at Heidi Health.
