Farewell to Clips: Apple Retires Video Editing App

Apple is phasing out support for Clips, announcing its removal from the App Store and discontinuation of future updates.

According to Apple’s support page, Clips is no longer available for new downloads as of October 10. However, existing users can still utilize the app on current or earlier iOS and iPadOS versions. They can also re-download Clips from their Apple accounts if necessary.

To prevent usability issues in the future, Apple advises users to save their Clips videos, with or without enhancements, to their photo library. This way, they can continue watching and editing the videos using alternative applications.

Introduced in 2017, Clips was Apple’s response to Snapchat and Instagram Stories, offering users a platform to combine photos and videos with filters, emojis, and music. TechCrunch’s Brian Heater initially noted the app’s simplistic video editing features but saw potential in showcasing Apple’s technology prowess and providing an alternative to emerging social platforms.

MacRumors states that while Clips received updates post-launch, recent years have only seen bug fixes. As reported on Reddit, Apple enthusiasts expressed little surprise, with many having tried the app years ago or being unfamiliar with it entirely. The rise of Sora, OpenAI’s AI video app, with over 1 million downloads, may also contribute to Clips feeling outdated.
