Microsoft Azure Outage: Disrupting Global Operations for Alaska Airlines and Beyond

An outage on Microsoft’s Azure cloud services disrupted operations for customers such as Alaska Airlines, Xbox users, and 365 subscribers worldwide. This incident occurred just before Microsoft’s quarterly earnings call, following similar outages at Amazon Web Services and Alaska Airlines. The latest disruption started at 9 a.m. Pacific Standard Time due to Azure Front Door (AFD) issues caused by an inadvertent configuration change.

The incident impacted various services, including Alaska Airlines’ website function, leading to disruptions in online check-in services. Passengers were directed to airline agents for boarding passes. Microsoft is currently taking steps to address the issue by blocking all changes to AFD services and rolling back to a previous configuration. There is no estimated time for resolution at this time. Additionally, recent outages at AWS and Alaska Airlines were attributed to software bugs and data center failures, respectively, affecting global online services and travel operations.
