The Future of Data Centers: Balancing Energy Consumption in 2025

A global energy organization’s evaluation of the present energy landscape presents a grim outlook: the consumption of renewable and non-renewable energy is escalating at a rapid pace, surpassing the frantic endeavors to construct new data centers to accommodate the unprecedented demand driven by AI technologies.

An international energy group’s assessment of the current energy landscape paints a dire picture: renewable and non-renewable energy consumption is rising faster than the furious efforts to build new data centers to handle unprecedented demand due to AI.

The International Energy Agency’s World Energy Outlook 2025, released this week, states that the global AI race is leading to record oil, natural gas, coal, and nuclear consumption, which is exacerbating geopolitical tensions and contributing to the climate crisis. The report states that demand for coal, driven primarily by China, has grown 50% faster than demand for natural gas, resulting in spikes in carbon emissions.

Energy Security Tensions

The IEA report examines current global energy policies, as well as those that have not yet been adopted, and urges a new approach, calling for net-zero emissions by 2050. It does not aim to serve as a forecast, but rather presents different scenarios based on various energy management paths.
