Thirty-three years later, Bernardo Quintero embarked on a mission to track down the mysterious programmer who unleashed a computer virus that altered the course of his life. This pursuit led him to uncover a remarkable journey that ultimately transformed a Spanish city into a thriving tech hub.

In the early 90s, a seemingly innocuous virus known as Virus Málaga infiltrated the computers at Málaga’s Polytechnic School, igniting a spark within a young Quintero to delve into the realm of cybersecurity. This initial encounter with the virus served as the catalyst for his future endeavors, culminating in the creation of VirusTotal, a cybersecurity startup that would later catch the attention of Google, resulting in the establishment of a flagship cybersecurity center in Málaga.

Driven by nostalgia and gratitude, Quintero embarked on a quest earlier this year to unveil the identity of the elusive programmer behind Virus Málaga. Through a meticulous investigation that involved revisiting the virus’s code and seeking assistance from fellow experts, Quintero finally unraveled the mystery and shared his poignant discovery on LinkedIn, sparking widespread interest.

The journey of discovery led Quintero back to his roots, prompting him to immerse himself in the intricacies of Virus Málaga and unearth details that had eluded him in the past. With the revelation of a key clue embedded in the virus’s code, Quintero was able to piece together the puzzle and uncover the identity of the elusive programmer behind the creation of Virus Málaga.

As the pieces of the puzzle fell into place, Quintero received a crucial tip from a former classmate, shedding light on the identity of the programmer behind Virus Málaga. Though the programmer, Antonio Astorga, had passed away, his legacy continued to resonate, revealing a profound connection between Quintero and Astorga that transcended time and space.

The revelation of Astorga’s identity marked a poignant moment for Quintero, underscoring the impact of their intertwined destinies and the profound legacy left behind by Astorga. Through his poignant LinkedIn post, Quintero shed light on Astorga’s contributions to the field of cybersecurity and honored his memory as a pioneering figure in Málaga’s tech landscape.

Astorga’s legacy extended beyond his role in Quintero’s journey, encompassing his enduring passion for IT and his influence on future generations through his son, Sergio. Sergio’s pursuit of a career in software engineering and cybersecurity symbolized a continuation of Astorga’s legacy, bridging the gap between the past and the present in a poignant tribute to his father’s memory.

For Quintero, the discovery of Astorga’s identity represented a profound moment of closure and connection, highlighting the enduring impact of their shared journey and the legacy of VirusTotal in shaping Málaga’s cybersecurity landscape. As new generations build upon this foundation, Quintero finds solace in the knowledge that their paths may cross again, forging new connections and continuing the legacy of innovation and collaboration in cybersecurity.
