Breaking Barriers: Anritsu and VTT Revolutionize D-band Wireless Communications

A major advancement in D-band wireless communication has been accomplished through a collaborative demonstration by Anritsu and VTT, showcasing the practicality of ultra-high-frequency wireless connections. The successful project confirms the potential of D-band technology for various applications, including backhaul, industrial connectivity, defense systems, and future 6G networks.

The joint effort between Anritsu and VTT has proven the capability of D-band technology to deliver reliable and high-capacity performance, addressing the needs of diverse industries and paving the way for the integration of ultra-high-frequency wireless links into real-world scenarios.

Exploring the Role of D-band in Next-Generation Networks

The D-band, covering frequencies from 110 GHz to 170 GHz, offers a broader bandwidth compared to current 5G millimeter-wave spectrum, making it a promising option for high-capacity wireless links where traditional fiber deployment is not feasible. Despite challenges like increased propagation loss at higher frequencies, advancements in antenna technology and signal processing are enabling the development of reliable short- and medium-range connections.

Validation of Multi-Gigabit Performance through System-Level Testing

During the collaborative trials, the teams conducted assessments on wireless links operating within the 110 GHz to 170 GHz range under realistic over-the-air conditions, showcasing the performance of wideband modulated signals with up to 8 GHz bandwidth. The results demonstrated impressive data rates in the tens-of-gigabits-per-second range, including 20 Gbps over short distances and consistent operation across several meters, setting a new benchmark for practical D-band wireless communications.

Innovative Transmitarray Design for Enhanced Performance

A key highlight of the demonstration was the introduction of a compact and lightweight transmitarray antenna by VTT, featuring advanced phase-shifting elements and vector-modulator MMICs for rapid electronic beam steering without the need for mechanical adjustments. This design offers precise control over the radio beam, ensuring link stability under varying conditions and making it ideal for dense backhaul deployments and dynamic industrial settings requiring swift beam adaptation.

Advancing Towards Industry Trials and Deployment

Following the successful system-level validation, Anritsu and VTT are gearing up to collaborate with industry partners to explore potential use cases and prepare the technology for field trials. This progress signifies a significant step towards integrating D-band wireless communications into future network infrastructures, driving the evolution towards 6G technology and unlocking growth opportunities across critical sectors.
