The European data centre market is experiencing a growing gap between demand and supply, with challenges in power access, planning, skills, and AI readiness emerging as key constraints in 2026. According to a recent report by BCS, over 3,000 respondents from 41 countries highlighted the struggle to meet the increasing demand for data centre capacity, despite expectations of further expansion this year.

Delivery capacity has become the primary bottleneck in the industry, as companies face skills shortages and struggle to keep up with the escalating demand for AI-related services. The report emphasizes the importance of addressing challenges in power, planning, and supply chains to ensure successful delivery outcomes. In markets like London, contractors are already feeling the pressure to enhance their capabilities to support projects, but the gap between ambition and deployable capacity continues to widen.

Moreover, sustainability priorities in the data centre industry are shifting towards building resilience and minimizing impact on the wider system. With geopolitical events expected to drive the demand for locally-generated renewable energy, there is a growing focus on energy security and community impact in site selection. As the industry navigates these challenges, it is crucial to prioritize sustainability and resilience to gain public trust and support for future developments.
