In a significant development highlighting the evolving landscape of sovereign cloud and artificial intelligence, G42, a technology group based in Abu Dhabi, has inked a deal with a Vietnamese consortium to construct a national-scale cloud and AI infrastructure in Vietnam. The collaboration, unveiled in Ho Chi Minh City, involves a commitment of up to $1 billion for the establishment of robust data centers and cloud services to cater to the needs of both the public and private sectors.

Vietnam’s ambition to establish itself as an “AI-native society” and a key player in the artificial intelligence and cloud services sector in Southeast Asia is reflected in this partnership. The initiative aims to uphold data sovereignty and digital resilience by ensuring that critical information and systems are under Vietnamese jurisdiction and control, aligning with the country’s broader aspirations. This venture marks a departure from conventional approaches to deploying cloud technologies on a national scale, particularly in emerging markets where infrastructure limitations have hindered widespread adoption.

A key focus of the agreement is on sovereignty and scalability, laying the groundwork for the implementation of cloud and AI services in Vietnam. The partners have outlined a strategic roadmap for infrastructure development, signaling a unified strategy for the large-scale adoption of public cloud services. Ali Al Amine, the Chief Commercial Officer at G42 International, described the pact as a groundbreaking model for national AI transformation, rooted in principles of sovereignty, collaboration, and purpose.

The collaboration between G42, FPT Corporation, and the Viet Thai Group combines technical expertise, market knowledge, and operational capabilities to deliver cloud and AI infrastructure support in Vietnam. With a substantial investment backing the planned expansion, the partnership underscores the growing demand for cloud-native and AI-driven services in the region, highlighting the significance of public-private partnerships in advancing national-level infrastructure projects.

The proposed cloud capacity under this partnership is designed to accommodate AI and cloud workloads for both government and commercial users, emphasizing the importance of high-performance computing and AI-ready infrastructure. By hosting data and workloads within the country’s borders, Vietnam aims to offer domestic entities more control over their information, a critical factor for regulated industries like finance and healthcare. The Vietnamese government’s efforts to enhance its regulatory framework align with the consortium’s objective of promoting hyperscale cloud deployment and broader public cloud adoption.

G42’s expansion into Vietnam reflects a broader trend where technology firms and governments seek to balance cloud expansion with sovereign oversight. The partnership not only provides G42 with a strategic foothold in a rapidly growing market but also aligns with Vietnam’s aspirations to emerge as a key player in the tech industry within the Southeast Asian region. The collaboration is expected to create jobs and foster skills development in the local economy, contributing to innovation and digital advancement in Vietnam.

As the project progresses, ongoing efforts will be required to ensure the competitiveness and relevance of the cloud and AI platforms offered by G42 and its partners, meeting the diverse needs of government systems and private sector applications. By navigating the evolving landscape of sovereign cloud projects and global cloud providers, Vietnam stands to benefit from enhanced digital infrastructure and services, driving economic growth and technological innovation across various industries.
