Datum Datacentres Enhances Sustainability with High Efficiency Cooling System

Datum Datacentres has recently implemented a state-of-the-art high efficiency free cooling chiller system at its Farnborough facility, aimed at reducing water and energy consumption in line with its sustainability strategy.

The new chillers have been installed to replace the firm’s previous adiabatic cooling system as part of a comprehensive lifecycle replacement project. This cutting-edge technology features a ‘through wall’ recirculating airflow topology, allowing for flexible rack power densities to cater to the needs of clients. The high efficiency free cooling chillers are equipped with optimised controls to leverage free cooling capacity and dynamic set points. By utilizing EC (Electronically Commutated) fans, inverter-driven motors, and electronic expansion valves, these chillers are able to significantly reduce power consumption and enhance control at varied loads.

The implementation of this new cooling system aligns with Datum’s sustainability plan, with an expected 70% reduction in water usage anticipated as a result of this upgrade. This project was carried out by Keysource, a team of critical environment specialists known for their expertise in creating efficient and sustainable solutions for data centres.

Commenting on this initiative, Dominic Phillips, CEO of Datum Datacentres, emphasized the company’s commitment to long-term sustainability and supporting clients and partners in achieving their ESG goals. Phillips stated, “We are dedicated to investing in the sustainability of our data centres, and we believe that the new chillers will not only reduce water usage by up to 70%, but also maintain high levels of efficiency.”

Datum Datacentres, supported by UBS Asset Management, offers sustainable enterprise-grade colocation services to businesses across the UK through its network of purpose-built, highly secure, and carrier-neutral data centres. The company prioritizes responsible growth while assisting clients and partners in reaching their environmental, social, and governance (ESG) objectives.
