Secure I.T. Environments Completes Fire Suppression Upgrade Project for Isle of Wight Council
Secure I.T. Environments recently finished a fire suppression upgrade project for the Isle of Wight (IoW) Council’s main data center and communications room located at Country Hall in Newport. The company was also granted a four-year maintenance contract for the new suppression system.
Enhancing Fire Safety Measures
The project focused on the council’s 221m3 data center and included the design, decommissioning of the existing fire suppression system, and installation of a new system. The entire process, which took place over a two-week period within the live data center, involved replacing the gas suppression system, control panels, cylinders, pipe work, smoke detection and audible alarms, VESDA early warning system, and remote monitoring.
Environmental Considerations
In line with the Isle of Wight Council’s commitment to minimizing its environmental impact, Secure I.T. Environments utilized the FK-5-1-12 clean agent solution for the fire suppression system. This solution, stored as a liquid under pressure, vaporizes into the data center in the event of a fire, leaving no residue behind. It is considered environmentally friendly with zero ozone depletion and a minimal global warming potential.
David Watts, Principal Officer Corporate Property Maintenance and Project Lead, expressed his satisfaction with the project, stating that Secure I.T. Environments delivered the most appropriate design and installation within the live data center environment, completing the project on schedule.
Chris Wellfair, Projects Director at Secure I.T. Environments, emphasized the importance of fire suppression systems in data centers, highlighting the need for regular maintenance, testing, and planning for system upgrades.
Ensuring the safety and efficiency of a data center’s fire suppression system is crucial for protecting valuable equipment and data. Secure I.T. Environments’ successful completion of the fire suppression upgrade project for the Isle of Wight Council demonstrates their expertise in designing and installing reliable systems tailored to specific requirements.
