Fighting corrosion – the end to rust? Quantum computing could provide a solution

RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK – The collaboration between IBM and Boeing is paving the way for groundbreaking advancements in the battle against corrosion through quantum computing technology.

By harnessing Boeing’s corrosion engineering expertise alongside IBM’s quantum computing capabilities, researchers have introduced two innovative techniques for conducting quantum simulations of the crucial water reduction phase in the corrosion process. Quantum computing proves to be highly effective in modeling quantum-scale systems, enabling the researchers to accurately calculate the energies involved in the water reduction reaction, surpassing traditional classical methods.

The team has also developed a new method for streamlining quantum circuits, reducing the quantum resources necessary to execute their simulations. This circuit simplification technique holds promise for various applications beyond their specific simulation endeavors.
