The Future of Data Centers: A Paradigm Shift

The data center industry is undergoing a profound transformation, one that is shaping the way we interact with technology in real-time. Bill Kleyman, the program chair of AFCOM Data Center World, recently shared his insights on the evolving landscape of data centers from the DCN News Desk at DCW 2025 in Washington, D.C.

Describing the current era as “extraordinary,” Kleyman drew parallels between the AI-driven revolution and a world that discovered oil before inventing the internal combustion engine. He noted that there is an abundance of raw data waiting to be harnessed, yet there is still a lack of clarity on how to fully leverage its potential.

According to Kleyman, the conversation surrounding data centers has shifted beyond mere technological advancements to a more profound question of how humanity interacts with data. With exploding rack densities and the emergence of megawatt-class infrastructure, data center operators are in a race to adapt to these changing dynamics.

He emphasized that the transition has already begun, with projections indicating a potential demand for up to 40 GW of AI-related capacity in the U.S. by 2030. However, Kleyman highlighted that the real challenge lies not only in meeting the increasing capacity requirements but also in embracing the imperative to adapt to this new reality.
