The EU and Japan Strengthen Tech and Digital Cooperation

The EU and Japan recently came together for their third Digital Partnership Council in Tokyo, emphasizing the importance of their ongoing tech and digital partnership amidst global uncertainties.

Henna Virkkunen, Executive Vice-President for Tech Sovereignty, Security and Democracy, and other key officials co-chaired the Council, highlighting the significance of boosting competitiveness and promoting values-driven global digital governance.

Key areas of cooperation include advancements in AI, 5G, 6G, semiconductors, quantum technology, data governance, cybersecurity, and more, with a focus on enhancing economic security through collaboration in critical digital technologies.

Key Outcomes from the Council Meeting

Efforts to ensure semiconductor supply chain resilience, commitments to promoting safe and secure AI, advancements in digital identities and trust services, establishment of a joint working group for data governance, and information exchange on cybersecurity developments were among the key outcomes from the Council meeting.

On 13 May, a Letter of Intent on quantum technology will be signed to enhance cooperation in quantum science and technology, addressing global challenges such as climate change, cybersecurity, and energy sustainability.

The fourth Digital Partnership Council is scheduled for 2026 in Brussels, continuing the momentum of tech and digital cooperation between the EU and Japan.
