Article:

Google has exciting news for Android developers as they will soon be able to enable widgets on Android 16 after its official release in June. While the feature is not yet active on Android 16 beta devices, Android Authority managed to activate it and made an interesting discovery. On the Pixel Tablet, users can access widgets by swiping right on the lock screen. However, on smartphones, widgets are linked to Android’s screensaver mode, which only activates when the device is charging or docked. Fortunately, Google is allowing developers to decide how the widget interface is triggered, meaning phone manufacturers may implement different approaches.

In addition to widgets, Google is testing several new features in Android 16, including a notification summaries feature. This feature automatically summarises conversation notifications from messaging apps and can be found in the Settings menu with the option to exclude specific apps from summarisation. Another feature making a comeback is icon shape customisation in the Pixel Launcher, allowing users to choose from six different icon shapes. The redesigned Settings app in Android 16 Beta 3 aims to improve navigation and visual clarity with Material You switches and distinct cards for settings entries.

Furthermore, Google is working on a refreshed status bar for Android, with new icons appearing in Android 16 Beta 3. Changes include a new Wi-Fi signal strength icon with three segments instead of five, a redesigned battery icon with a dynamic colour scheme, and a bolder font for the percentage. Android 16 might also introduce new features for three-button navigation, such as the ability to preview the next screen by pressing and holding the back button. Users of three-button navigation can also expect a corner swipe gesture for summoning the default assistant.

Lastly, with the second developer preview of Android 16, Google introduced a new option for screen-off fingerprint unlock. This feature allows users to unlock their device using the fingerprint scanner even when the screen is off, eliminating the need to wake the screen first. Overall, Android 16 is shaping up to be a feature-packed update with exciting new capabilities and improvements for users and developers alike. Android 16 DP2 introduces a new feature called ‘Screen-off Fingerprint Unlock’ to address the inconvenience of having to wake the screen to unlock using the fingerprint scanner. This setting can be found in the ‘Security & Privacy’ settings and has been tested to work effectively on the Google Pixel 9 Pro.

For users hesitant to update to Android 16 DP2, there are alternative ways to keep the fingerprint scanner accessible. These include enabling options like ‘Always show time and info,’ ‘Lift to check phone,’ and ‘Tap to check phone’ in the display and lock screen settings.

Additionally, Android 16 is rumored to introduce an Advanced Protection Mode that enhances security by allowing apps to apply additional security measures when enabled. Another feature in the update allows users to open their wallet by double-pressing the power button, a gesture previously reserved for launching the camera. Furthermore, a new ‘postured’ trigger for screen savers might be introduced, activating the screen saver only when the device is upright on a stand while charging.
