Summary:
1. IMDEA Materials researchers have developed a new thermoresponsive electrolyte to enhance the safety of lithium-ion batteries.
2. The innovative electrolyte formulation aims to prevent thermal runaway, a common cause of battery fires and explosions.
3. This breakthrough research, part of the ‘Battery 2030+’ program, is detailed in a publication in Advanced Functional Materials.

Article:
IMDEA Materials Institute has made significant strides in enhancing the safety of lithium-ion batteries with the introduction of a new thermoresponsive electrolyte. This breakthrough comes as a response to the risks associated with thermal runaway, a critical failure mode that can result in hazardous battery incidents. The innovative electrolyte formulation, a key outcome of Dr. Arnab Ghosh’s Smart electrolyte with inherent flame-retardancy project, aligns with the European Commission’s initiative to develop safer and more sustainable batteries under the ‘Battery 2030+’ program.

The research highlights the limitations of current temperature-responsive trilayer separators in commercial LIBs, which often fail to prevent thermal runaway effectively due to thermal shrinkage issues. To address this challenge, researchers have introduced temperature-responsive electrolytes that halt Li-ion transport within the battery upon reaching a specific temperature threshold, thus mitigating internal temperature spikes and reducing the risk of catastrophic failure. The new electrolyte composition, comprising a lithium salt dissolved in vinylene carbonate (VC) and 2,5-dimethylfuran (DMFu), demonstrates efficient operation at room temperature while offering dual protection against thermal runaway.

Lead researcher Dr. Ghosh explains that the thermoresponsive electrolytes exhibit a two-step regulation mechanism, triggering a warning phase at 100°C and achieving complete thermal shutdown at 120°C. This intelligent modulation of thermal runaway provides a built-in safeguard against the fire hazards associated with LIBs, marking a significant advancement in battery safety technology. The details of this groundbreaking research are outlined in the publication “Deciphering a New Electrolyte Formulation for Intelligent Modulation of Thermal Runaway to Improve the Safety of Lithium-Ion Batteries” in Advanced Functional Materials, underscoring the importance of continuous innovation in the field of battery technology.
