When Baiju Bhatt made the decision to step away from his role as Chief Creative Officer at Robinhood, little did anyone know that he would embark on a journey to launch a space company that could potentially revolutionize the aerospace industry. His new venture, Aetherflux, is aiming to prove that beaming solar power from space is not just a fantasy but a game-changer for renewable energy and national defense.

Bhatt, who co-founded Robinhood in 2013 after completing his master’s degree in mathematics at Stanford, seems unfazed by the lack of attention his new company is receiving. In fact, he sees it as an advantage, allowing Aetherflux to operate with less competition in the field. With $60 million already raised for the project, he is determined to transition from an “aspiring space company” to a full-fledged “space company” in the near future.

The inspiration behind Bhatt’s space ambitions traces back to his childhood, where his father’s work as a research scientist at NASA fueled his interest in space exploration. Now, at a similar age to when his father joined NASA, Bhatt is ready to make his mark in the space industry with Aetherflux.

Unlike traditional space solar power concepts that rely on massive geostationary satellites, Aetherflux’s approach is more compact and agile. By utilizing fiber lasers to convert solar power into focused light that can be directed to receivers on the ground, the company aims to launch a demonstration satellite next year. This innovative technology has caught the attention of the Department of Defense, which has provided funding for the program due to its potential military applications.

The precision and portability of Aetherflux’s technology could have far-reaching implications for American military operations, offering a strategic advantage in the battlefield. While the success of the project remains to be seen, Bhatt’s outsider perspective and determination to seize overlooked opportunities may just be the catalyst needed to bring about a breakthrough in space-based solar power.

As Aetherflux continues to push boundaries in space technology, Bhatt emphasizes the importance of rigorous testing and a hardware-rich approach to ensure the success of their spacecraft. With implications beyond military uses, the potential impact of Aetherflux’s innovation could reshape the landscape of both renewable energy and national security.

Space-based solar power has the potential to revolutionize renewable energy by providing continuous power day and night, regardless of location on Earth. This innovative approach could transform energy distribution, offering sustainable power to remote areas without the need for extensive infrastructure and providing crucial emergency power during disasters.

Aetherflux, a pioneering company in this field, has assembled a team of experts from prestigious institutions like Lawrence Livermore Labs, Rivian, Cruise, and SpaceX. The organization, led by Bhatt, is actively expanding its workforce and inviting skilled individuals to join their mission of tackling challenging projects.

Bhatt’s commitment to Aetherflux is evident through his significant financial contributions, including self-funding the initial $10 million and participating in a recent $50 million funding round with prominent investors like Index Ventures, Interlagos, and Breakthrough Energy Ventures. The ambitious timeline set by Aetherflux involves launching a demonstration satellite within a year, showcasing their dedication to progress.

Drawing inspiration from successful projects like GPS, which originated from a DARPA initiative, Aetherflux is collaborating closely with Dr. Paul Jaffe, a leading expert in beaming technology. This partnership highlights the potential for military-developed technologies to transition into commercial applications, with DARPA acting as a crucial link between government and industry.

Bhatt envisions a future where space-based energy solutions become more accessible to commercial entities, especially with advancements like SpaceX’s Starship making space travel more feasible. The shift towards commercialization signifies a broader impact beyond military uses, paving the way for widespread adoption of innovative energy solutions.
