Rising Emissions: The Environmental Impact of Data Center Expansion in 2024

Amazon experienced a rise in carbon emissions for the first time in three years in 2024, primarily due to increased data center construction and fuel consumption by delivery providers. This increase is a stark contrast to their pledge to eliminate emissions by 2040, with emissions up by 6% from the previous year.

Amazon’s carbon footprint has been a growing concern as the company and its tech counterparts invest heavily in data centers to power artificial intelligence applications. These centers require large amounts of energy-intensive materials like concrete and steel, contributing to the surge in emissions. The reliance on natural gas and coal-fired power in some areas has raised alarms among environmental watchdogs, as tech companies strive to find cleaner energy sources to reduce their impact on the environment.

To combat their carbon footprint, Amazon and other data center giants like Alphabet, Meta Platforms, and Microsoft have committed to purchasing carbon-free nuclear power in the future. Despite these efforts, Amazon saw a 1% increase in emissions from purchased electricity last year, attributed to the higher electricity usage needed to support advanced technologies. This highlights the importance of scaling up carbon-free energy sources to meet the demands of evolving tech needs.
