Rolls-Royce is expanding its energy portfolio by introducing advanced mtu gas engines with rapid start capabilities. These engines are ideal for powering data centers and stabilizing the power grid.

New Advanced mtu Gas Engines for Data Centers and Power Grid Stability

Rolls-Royce is diversifying its energy solutions with the introduction of cutting-edge mtu gas engines that feature fast-start technology. These engines are specifically designed to meet the power needs of data centers and ensure grid stability.

The upcoming 20-cylinder mtu Series 4000 L64 engine, scheduled for release in 2026, is tailored for the 60 Hz market, predominantly in North America. With a robust output of 2.8 Megawatts achievable in just 45 seconds, this engine represents a ten percent improvement in performance compared to its predecessor. By eliminating the need for a gearbox, this latest model offers significant space savings for data center operators. The current models of mtu Series 4000 gas gensets are already in use worldwide, offering a 120-second fast-start capability for both 50 Hz and 60 Hz markets.

Enhanced Power Solutions for Data Centers

The fast-start mtu gas gensets play a crucial role in delivering emergency power to data centers, providing continuous power supply, and complementing mtu diesel gensets. In scenarios where the existing grid infrastructure struggles to meet the demands of a new data center, the continuous power application of these engines becomes invaluable. By deploying an independent gas power plant, data center operators can achieve faster online integration, enhance energy security, and explore additional revenue streams by supplying excess electricity to the grid. These generators offer an impressive lifespan of 84,000 hours before requiring maintenance and are available in a compact containerized design.

Sustainable Energy Solutions

mtu gas units contribute to emission reduction by lowering nitrogen oxides and CO2 levels while enhancing power generation efficiency. They are capable of running on eco-friendly fuels like biogas and biomethane, with future adaptability to operate on 100% hydrogen or hydrogen blends as green hydrogen becomes more accessible.

Rolls-Royce Technology Empowering Data Centers

mtu gas gensets, powered by Rolls-Royce technology, are currently operational in various data centers, including SpaceDC’s campus in Jakarta. These engines ensure a reliable, efficient, and clean power supply for both base load and emergency situations.

Global Impact of mtu Gas Engines

The modularity of mtu gas engines addresses the challenges faced by modern power grids, strained by the presence of large data centers and fluctuating renewable energy sources. These engines have been successfully deployed globally, from supporting peak loads in Alberta, Canada, to powering a significant fleet in the UK.
