Google has accidentally revealed information about its upcoming Material 3 Expressive design language.

The tech giant is gearing up for its highly anticipated Google I/O 2025 event, where the new Material 3 Expressive UI will be showcased alongside Android 16.

While Google has been dropping hints about its new design language, a recent slip-up revealed more details than intended.

Google’s big Material 3 Expressive leak

Google mistakenly published a blog post that delved into the features of Material 3 Expressive UI. The post was quickly taken down, but not before internet users could capture its contents.

The blog post discussed the extensive research that went into developing Material 3 Expressive UI, which began with a simple question from an intern in 2022:

“Why do all these apps look so similar and boring? Can’t we enhance the user experience?”

Google conducted 46 research studies involving over 18,000 participants to refine Material 3 Expressive, using methods like eye tracking, experiments, and focus groups.

What to expect from Material 3 Expressive

Google describes the Material 3 Expressive system as “both visually appealing and user-friendly,” focusing on highlighting key actions and grouping similar elements together.

To enhance user experience, Google has increased tap target size, color contrast, and other important aspects of the interface to make it more accessible to all users.

A prominent feature of Material 3 Expressive is a new floating toolbar at the bottom of Google apps, designed to emphasize key UI elements.

Another example of Material 3 Expressive in action is the revamped Gmail app, which now boasts a larger and more prominent Send button placed conveniently above the keyboard.

Google’s approach to developing Material 3 Expressive involved gathering feedback from users to create a design language that resonates with their preferences. The results are expected to be both innovative and user-centric.
