A group of young students emerged victorious in the recent TiE Young Entrepreneur (TYE) Seattle chapter finals competition by presenting their innovative biodegradable plastic bag creation. Team Kymavi secured the top spot and a $3,000 prize, earning the opportunity to represent Seattle at the upcoming TYE Global Finals in Washington, D.C. Their eco-friendly plastic bags are designed to break down into marine- and land-biodegradable components, releasing ocean-healing additives that absorb pollutants and combat ocean acidification. The team, consisting of students from Skyline High School and Newport High School, has been working on this project since last October, with a mission to make a positive impact on the environment. Their unique blend of additives, including chitosan and calcium carbonate, sets their bags apart from traditional biodegradable options by actively benefiting ecosystems. Kymavi plans to utilize the prize money to cover operational expenses and pursue necessary certifications and patents for their innovative product.
