Summary:
1. AI is revolutionizing the way Chevron interacts with data to improve drilling operations.
2. Chevron partnered with Microsoft and SLB to modernize cloud-based tools for data processing.
3. The focus on modularity and avoiding prolonged POCs has been key in deploying successful AI use cases at Chevron.

Article:

The impact of artificial intelligence (AI) on the energy industry is evident in how Chevron, a 150-year-old energy giant, is leveraging technology to enhance its drilling operations. Offshore in the Gulf, Chevron is utilizing AI to process vast amounts of data to determine optimal drilling locations while prioritizing safety and environmental concerns.

In a collaboration with Microsoft and oilfield services company SLB, Chevron launched the ‘Triple Crown’ project to modernize cloud-based tools. This initiative involved integrating Azure-native apps into SLB’s DELFI* cognitive exploration and production platform, allowing Chevron to extract valuable insights from multiple data sources across various operational environments.

Chevron’s General Manager for enterprise AI, Steve Bowman, emphasized the importance of data as a catalyst for AI use cases within the company. By transitioning to the cloud and adopting AI-driven solutions, Chevron has been able to scale up its algorithms, analyze larger areas for drilling, and accelerate decision-making processes.

One of the key outcomes of Chevron’s AI integration is the development of three products: FDPlan, DrillPlan, and DrillOps. FDPlan, powered by high-performance computing, enables faster decision-making by integrating subsurface models. DrillPlan and DrillOps cater to engineers and drilling teams, respectively, streamlining the planning and execution processes.

Moreover, Chevron’s focus on modularity has been instrumental in enhancing user experience and operational efficiency. The introduction of ‘Chevron Assist,’ a chat interface for navigating health, safety, and environmental standards, exemplifies the company’s commitment to simplifying complex workflows and improving collaboration among teams.

In deploying AI solutions, Bowman’s team at Chevron has prioritized practicality over prolonged proofs of concept (POCs). By aligning AI initiatives with tangible business outcomes and fostering user trust through transparent communication, Chevron has successfully integrated next-gen tools into its operations.

As Chevron continues its journey towards digital transformation, the company’s strategic approach to AI adoption serves as a model for other enterprises looking to harness the power of technology for sustainable growth. With a focus on innovation, collaboration, and user-centric design, Chevron is paving the way for a more efficient and data-driven future in the energy sector.
