Digital Realty Makes Strides Towards 100% Renewable Energy
As part of its sustainability efforts, Digital Realty is committed to transitioning to 100% renewable energy in various regions across the United States and Asia-Pacific. By adjusting its power supply contracts, the company aims to support its data centers in Texas, New Jersey, California, and Australia with regionally sourced renewables.
Texas
In Texas, Digital Realty is set to achieve 100% renewable energy by utilizing a mix of wind and solar power purchase agreements (PPAs) along with renewable energy credits (RECs) sourced locally. This initiative will support the company’s operations in Dallas, Houston, and Austin markets.
New Jersey
Starting January 1, 2024, Digital Realty will power its facilities in New Jersey with 100% renewable energy. By increasing the renewable capacity within its energy supply contracts and leveraging wind resources from Pennsylvania, the company is making significant strides towards its sustainability goals in the region.
California
At its 200 Paul Ave facility in San Francisco, Digital Realty has already achieved 100% renewable energy coverage as of October 2023. The facility receives renewable energy directly from the local utility supplier, ensuring a sustainable power source for its operations in the region.
Asia-Pacific
In Asia-Pacific, Digital Realty has signed contracts with utility suppliers in Sydney and Melbourne to transition to 100% renewable energy by January 1, 2024, and January 1, 2026, respectively. This move demonstrates the company’s commitment to reducing its environmental impact globally.
With over 120 data centers worldwide now powered by 100% renewable electricity, Digital Realty continues to lead the industry in sustainable data center solutions. By surpassing the milestone of one gigawatt of renewables under contract in 2022, the company is on track to achieve its Science-Based Targets Initiative (SBTI) goals of reducing emissions by 2030.
“We are dedicated to aligning economic growth with sustainability and supporting our customers’ clean energy needs as they grow,” said Aaron Binkley, VP Sustainability at Digital Realty. “These new contracts bring us closer to our goal of reducing emissions and making a positive impact on the environment.”
