Energy Showdown: Bloom Energy vs. Plug Power – The Battle for Decade Domination
SHARE

Investors eyeing the clean energy sector are closely watching Bloom Energy (NYSE: BE) and Plug Power (NASDAQ: PLUG) as they take different paths in the race for cleaner energy solutions. Bloom Energy focuses on solid-oxide fuel cells, while Plug Power’s technology centers around proton exchange membrane fuel cells. The question arises: which company is better positioned to dominate the next decade?

Bloom Energy’s Growth Trajectory

Bloom Energy boasts a robust client portfolio with major players like AT&T, Honda, and Oracle. The company is strategically positioned to meet the rising energy demands driven by artificial intelligence (AI). Recently, Bloom announced a significant $5 billion partnership with Brookfield Asset Management (NYSE: BAM) to provide on-site power solutions for AI data centers and infrastructure.

Bloom Energy is experiencing a surge in demand from AI data centers, evident in its latest quarterly report showing a 57% year-over-year revenue increase to $519 million. The company’s gross margin also improved by 5.4 percentage points. Despite a stellar 290% stock price surge in 2025, Bloom faces challenges in scaling up to meet the escalating demand, aiming to double capacity to 2 gigawatts by 2026.

Plug Power’s Market Potential

Plug Power holds a first-mover advantage and collaborates with industry giants like Amazon and Walmart. The company’s foothold in the green hydrogen sector hints at substantial growth opportunities, with the total addressable market projected to reach $60.5 billion by 2030.

Despite facing cash burn challenges and operational hurdles, Plug Power saw slight improvements in its financials in the first nine months of 2025. Notably, its electrolyzer business generated $65 million in revenue in the third quarter. The stock, however, experienced a 4% decline in 2025.

Future Dominance: Bloom vs. Plug

For investors seeking stability and short-term profitability, Bloom Energy emerges as the favorable choice. Conversely, Plug Power presents an appealing option for those comfortable with higher risks and seeking potential long-term gains. Plug’s fortunes could soar over the next decade if green hydrogen gains significant traction.

Analyst Insights and Choice

Before considering an investment in Plug Power, investors should evaluate the insights from the Motley Fool Stock Advisor analyst team. While Plug Power didn’t make their top 10 stock picks, historical data showcases the remarkable returns potential in the selected stocks. Notably, the Motley Fool Stock Advisor has significantly outperformed the S&P 500, highlighting the value of their recommendations.
