Entergy to Build Three Gas Plants for Meta Data Center

Louisiana regulators have given the green light to Entergy Corporation’s proposal to construct three natural gas plants to provide power to Meta Platform’s largest data center. This move is set to support Meta’s ambitious AI initiatives, with the data center, Hyperion, expected to rival the size of Manhattan and consume up to 5 GW of electricity at full capacity.

Meta’s new data center, Hyperion, situated in rural Louisiana, is a massive four million–square–foot complex designed to bolster the company’s cutting-edge artificial intelligence models. Mark Zuckerberg, the CEO of Meta, has highlighted the significance of this facility, emphasizing its potential to revolutionize AI capabilities. Hyperion is a key player in the AI revolution driving a notable surge in power demand across the U.S., leading to increased utility costs and the urgent need for enhanced infrastructure.

Entergy Louisiana CEO Phillip May has confirmed Meta’s commitment to share the project costs, which are projected to generate around 2.3 GW of power. Additionally, the utility company plans to construct new transmission lines to cater to the data center and secure up to 1.5 GW of solar power. Meta has also expressed its dedication to collaborating with Entergy to fund the project without imposing additional financial burdens on grid customers. The company aims to incorporate clean and renewable energy sources into the grid to offset the energy consumption of the Richland Parish data center, alongside launching various eco-friendly projects statewide.

The Louisiana Public Service Commission expedited the approval process following concerns raised by Entergy regarding potential relocation of Meta’s data center to a different state if delays persisted, as indicated in a report by Citigroup led by analyst Ryan Levine.

Despite the regulatory approval, some critics argue that the construction of the gas plants may escalate consumer bills and pose risks to public health and the environment. Logan Burke, the executive director of the Alliance for Affordable Energy, voiced concerns over the prioritization of Big Tech and utility company profits over the well-being of Louisiana residents, citing potential impacts on electricity costs and water resources.
