Expanding AI Gigafactories to Drive Innovation in Europe
The EuroHPC initiative is dedicated to advancing supercomputing, quantum computing, and data infrastructure in the EU, while also nurturing high-performance computing technologies and skills for European science and industry. The recent amendment to the EuroHPC regulation includes the establishment of AI factories, dynamic ecosystems fostering innovation and collaboration in artificial intelligence. The proposed second amendment further supports the development of AI gigafactories, enhancing Europe’s position in AI innovation.
Empowering Larger AI Models
AI gigafactories are envisioned as cutting-edge facilities offering substantial computing power in energy-efficient data centers. These facilities will support the complete AI lifecycle, including the development, training, and implementation of large AI models and applications. By providing advanced computing resources to European researchers, startups, and industry partners, AI gigafactories will reinforce Europe’s strategic autonomy and competitiveness in advanced AI technologies.
Unlocking the Potential of Quantum Technologies
The new quantum technologies pillar within the EuroHPC JU will encompass quantum computing, quantum communication, quantum sensing, and metrology across various domains. This initiative aims to enhance the security, resilience, and competitiveness of the European quantum supply chain while bolstering the EU’s scientific and industrial leadership. EuroHPC JU will spearhead the Union’s quantum technology agenda, supporting research and innovation activities like the Union’s Quantum Flagship.
Establishment of a Quantum Technologies Advisory Group
To align with these changes, EuroHPC JU will incorporate expertise in quantum technologies into its governance structure. A new EuroHPC Quantum Technologies Advisory Group (QTAG) will be established as part of the Industrial and Scientific Advisory Board. QTAG will provide insights for the JU’s Multi Annual Strategic Plan and offer expert guidance to the Governing Board, complementing existing advisory groups.
