Google Goes Above and Beyond Data Act Requirements

Google recently announced a new service that eliminates in-parallel processing fees for customers in the EU and UK, surpassing the basic requirement set by the data act. In comparison, Microsoft is choosing to keep fees at cost, as highlighted in a report from the UK’s Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) in 2024, citing challenges in implementing Article 34.

IBM has committed to identifying EU customers based on the location of their headquarters to ensure compliance with the statute. Google, on the other hand, expressed its support for compliance and highlighted its efforts to promote multicloud usage.

AWS, although comments were redacted from the report, confirmed that it offers reduced fees for EU customers. Additionally, AWS provides 100 gigabytes of data transfer per month for free, benefiting nearly 90% of its enterprise customers who already pay nothing for data transfer.

By taking proactive steps to go beyond the basic requirements and offering cost-saving initiatives, Google, Microsoft, IBM, and AWS are catering to the needs of their EU customers while ensuring compliance with data regulations. This commitment to customer satisfaction and regulatory compliance sets a positive example for the tech industry as a whole.
