Google recently made a series of announcements about its product lineup at the Google Cloud Next 25 event. The company unveiled updates that focus on development and expanding its global network infrastructure, with a strong emphasis on integrating AI features into many of its offerings.

Traditionally, cloud models require teams to manage various infrastructure elements such as virtual machines, storage, and networks before they can begin building applications on top of them. Google is aiming to streamline this process by shifting the focus to applications themselves, rather than the underlying infrastructure.

One of the new tools introduced is the Application Design Centre, which is currently in public preview. This tool provides developers and platform teams with a visual and collaborative space to design application templates. Users can easily drag and drop components, view infrastructure-as-code in-line, and deploy applications all from the same interface. The Application Design Centre also integrates with Google’s App Hub, which tracks deployments and offers troubleshooting tools.

Cloud Hub is another new interface that Google introduced to manage applications that span across different services and regions. This tool aggregates data such as system health status, resource usage, performance metrics, and billing information all in one place. Cloud Hub is also available in public preview through the Google Cloud console.

In terms of AI features, Google has embedded generative AI into coding workflows and cloud management with Gemini Code Assist. This platform is now integrated into popular developer environments like Android Studio, VSCode, Firebase Studio, and JetBrains’s IDEs. Gemini Code Assist helps automate tasks such as code writing, debugging, and documentation. It can even build entire applications from specification documents and translate between programming languages. The platform includes a kanban interface to show real-time AI activity and suggest revisions.

For mobile development, Firebase Studio offers AI agents that can generate app prototypes based on user prompts, write backend logic, and create user interface elements. The platform also automates test creation and execution.

Gemini Cloud Assist provides AI-guided insights for infrastructure planning, monitoring, and optimization. A new Investigations feature, currently in private preview, analyzes logs, system changes, and telemetry data to help identify the root causes of incidents or bottlenecks. The findings can then be reviewed by developers or escalated to Google Support teams for further assistance.

Cost Explorer is a dashboard that displays resource usage and associated costs, linking metrics like CPU or memory usage with spending. This allows teams to identify underutilized assets and receive recommendations for optimization based on 30 days of data. The tool can be filtered by project, service, or resource type.

In addition to these software updates, Google also announced Cloud WAN, a managed offering designed for enterprises looking to transition away from MPLS networks and complex SD-WAN configurations. This service, running on Google’s infrastructure, covers site-to-site traffic and cloud architecture.

One standout feature of Cloud WAN is Cross-Site Interconnect, which is currently in preview. This feature provides Layer 2 connectivity between data centers using dedicated 10G or 100G links. Google’s Premium Tier network routes traffic through the nearest point of presence to minimize latency, and integrates with security solutions from Palo Alto Networks and Menlo Security for enhanced networking and security capabilities.

Cross-Site Interconnect is available on both usage-based and fixed pricing models and is compatible with third-party connectivity vendors such as Cisco, Fortinet, and BT. Google claims that this platform can deliver up to 40% lower total cost of ownership compared to self-managed WANs.

Overall, Google’s latest updates and announcements showcase the company’s commitment to innovation and efficiency in cloud computing and AI integration. These new tools and features aim to simplify development workflows, enhance application performance, and optimize infrastructure management for users across various industries.
