The Department of Homeland Security has been exerting pressure on technology companies to uncover the identities of individuals who criticize Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), as reported by The New York Times.

This recent development aligns with other reports, as Bloomberg highlighted five instances where Homeland Security attempted to reveal the owners of anonymous Instagram accounts, only to retract their subpoenas after facing legal action. Furthermore, The Washington Post shed light on the department’s increased use of administrative subpoenas, bypassing judicial approval to target U.S. citizens.

According to The New York Times, the once sporadically used practice has now become more prevalent, with hundreds of subpoenas being issued to Google, Reddit, Discord, and Meta in recent months. These subpoenas primarily target accounts lacking real names and containing content critical of ICE or disclosing the whereabouts of ICE agents.

In some instances, Google, Meta, and Reddit have complied with these requests. Google reiterated its commitment to notifying users about subpoenas when feasible and resisting overly broad requests.
