In Hemel Hempstead, a new data centre has received preliminary approval to be built on an industrial plot, replacing an existing warehouse and office building. The project, designed by Scott Brownrigg for Northtree Investment Management, aims to enhance local digital infrastructure and upgrade the workplace environment and public areas in the estate. The three-story data centre will span approximately 5,000sqm and include office space, as well as necessary infrastructure like a substation, parking, and servicing areas.

The development in Hemel Hempstead adds to the town’s growing reputation as a hub for data centres, joining other established clusters in nearby areas like Slough and Stockley Park. While demand for data centre capacity in the region is high, there has been some pushback from local councils, as seen in the case of a recent decision in Abbots Langley. To ensure community support for the new data centre, Scott Brownrigg has carefully designed the project to prioritize sustainability and integration with the surrounding landscape. The design emphasizes natural ventilation, security, and biodiversity through the use of native vegetation along the site boundaries.

By maximizing the use of industrial land and incorporating sustainable practices from the start, the data centre project aims to contribute positively to the existing streetscape while meeting the area’s increasing need for digital infrastructure. The team behind the development is focused on creating a modern, efficient facility that aligns with the evolving demands of the data center industry while maintaining a commitment to environmental responsibility and community engagement.
