At Huawei Connect 2025, open-source AI development was the main focus, with Huawei announcing plans to make its entire AI software stack publicly available by the end of the year. This move is aimed at addressing past developer challenges and improving the practical usability of Ascend infrastructure.
Huawei’s Deputy Chairman, Eric Xu, acknowledged the friction developers have faced with Ascend infrastructure and highlighted the company’s efforts to address customer feedback and improve the platform. The open-source strategy is designed to enable community contributions and transparency to enhance the platform’s technical capabilities.
Huawei also committed to open-sourcing CANN, the foundational toolkit for AI frameworks, as well as the Mind series application enablement kits and toolchains by the end of the year. This will allow developers to inspect, modify, and extend the software, fostering community contributions and innovation in the AI development ecosystem. Additionally, Huawei plans to open-source its openPangu foundation models, providing starting points for domain-specific applications without the need for extensive computational resources.
