Server CPU Market Update: Intel and AMD Performance

According to industry expert McCarron, server CPU shipments from both Intel and AMD remained stagnant on a sequential basis, with no significant growth following last quarter’s unusual increase. However, on a year-over-year basis, the server market saw a significant uptick due to being at cyclical lows a year ago and undergoing inventory adjustments.

Intel managed to maintain total server unit shipments by shifting focus to non-data center products like Xeon D in networking/storage servers, although this move resulted in lower revenues due to lower average selling prices (ASPs). On the other hand, AMD achieved record-high server revenues by selling a higher mix of its new Turin core CPUs, leading to a modest increase in market share to 37.2%.

While Intel slightly outpaced AMD in shipments excluding IoT/SoC embedded products, AMD made gains in the desktop segment where it is strong. Arm also demonstrated strength in the server market, driven by Nvidia’s GB200 processors, while Apple saw a slight increase in client shipments offset by a decline in Chromebook sales.
