KDDI and DriveNets Partner to Enhance Open Network Architecture

In a move to accelerate the adoption of open network architecture, KDDI and DriveNets have joined forces in a strategic cooperation agreement. This partnership aims to separate hardware and software components, maximizing capital investment and operational efficiency in large-scale network deployments.

As part of the agreement, KDDI will implement DriveNets Network Cloud solution in backbone core routers at key sites, with the goal of achieving commercial operations by the end of 2025. This initiative is driven by the need to address the growing data demands of the AI age and create a flexible network architecture that can swiftly adapt to changing market dynamics and technological advancements.

The significance of open network design has become increasingly apparent in recent years, as the rapid expansion of AI technology has led to higher traffic volumes and diverse network requirements. By embracing disaggregated routers, KDDI aims to enhance network scalability and enable the implementation of new features tailored to specific needs.

Since 2020, KDDI has been actively developing Cluster-Based Distributed Disaggregated Backbone Routers (DDBR) through the Telecom Infra Project. These routers offer flexible capacity expansion and are not restricted by physical chassis limitations. By completing technical certifications and commercial deployments of DDBRs, KDDI has demonstrated its commitment to advancing disaggregated network solutions.

DriveNets’ software-based network solutions have gained traction among major international carriers for their compatibility with disaggregated routers. The strategic alliance between KDDI and DriveNets builds on the proven reliability of DriveNets’ software, paving the way for enhanced network operational efficiency.

KDDI’s Senior Managing Executive Officer, Kazuyuki Yoshimura, expressed optimism about the partnership, emphasizing the importance of creating a scalable and adaptable network architecture suitable for the AI era. Susan Ido, CEO of DriveNets, highlighted the collaborative efforts to promote openness, disaggregation, and innovation throughout the network, aiming to simplify network operations and leverage automation and generative AI technologies.

Overall, the partnership between KDDI and DriveNets signifies a significant step towards advancing open network architecture and meeting the evolving demands of the digital age. By combining their expertise and resources, the two companies are poised to drive innovation and set new benchmarks in the telecommunications sector.
