Microsoft has partnered with Nscale to rent capacity at a data center in Portugal, utilizing Nvidia’s latest AI chips to meet the increasing demand for artificial intelligence. The project is set to be operational by early 2026 at the Start Campus data center park in Sines, located south of Lisbon.

Tech giant Microsoft is expanding its computing resources by collaborating with Nscale in Portugal to address the rising need for artificial intelligence capabilities. The project, powered by Nvidia’s cutting-edge AI chips, will be housed at the Start Campus data center park in Sines, strategically positioned near Lisbon. Scheduled for completion in early 2026, this initiative underscores Microsoft’s commitment to meeting the escalating demand for AI technologies.

In response to the surging utilization of AI, Microsoft and other industry leaders are striving to enhance their computing capacity. To bridge the gap, Microsoft has engaged with “neocloud” providers like Coreweave and Nebius, in addition to partnering with Nscale in Norway and the UK. This strategic move aims to leverage high-performance cloud computing services to support Microsoft’s AI initiatives effectively.

Nscale, a UK-based data center company derived from a crypto mining background, recently secured substantial funding following collaborations with Nvidia and OpenAI. The upcoming project in Portugal will integrate 12,600 of Nvidia’s latest Blackwell Ultra GB300 GPUs, showcasing a significant leap in AI infrastructure.

Portugal’s renewable energy sources play a vital role in supporting energy-intensive data centers. However, the rapid growth of AI technologies poses challenges to the country’s clean energy ecosystem, prompting stakeholders to explore sustainable solutions for future scalability.

Start Campus’s ambitious plans to establish data center facilities in Sines align with the increasing demand for advanced computing infrastructure. With a focus on renewable energy and innovative cooling methods, the campus aims to minimize its environmental impact while meeting the growing needs of the digital economy.
