Microsoft held its annual shareholder meeting on Friday, where discussions veered between a future shaped by AI advancements and concerns about algorithmic bias and censorship. Shareholders raised issues related to AI censorship and its potential impact on political and religious speech, drawing parallels between George Orwell’s 1984 and Microsoft’s Copilot AI chatbot.
One shareholder, William Flaig, founder of Ridgeline Research, urged for a report on the risks of AI censorship, citing Orwell’s dystopian themes and the role of Copilot in shaping the future of AI. During the virtual meeting Q&A session, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella emphasized the company’s commitment to prioritizing human values in AI development, focusing on transparency, fairness, security, and privacy.
Microsoft’s board opposed all outside proposals related to AI risks, emphasizing the long-term business potential of AI and cloud technologies. Nadella highlighted the company’s efforts in building a “planet-scale cloud and AI factory,” while CFO Amy Hood showcased record fiscal year results and strong demand for AI investments.
