Microsoft’s Family Safety feature, commonly used for parental controls, has been causing issues for Google Chrome users on Windows. Reports of the browser not opening or abruptly closing started surfacing on June 3rd.

Microsoft has inadvertently introduced a bug in Family Safety that targets Google Chrome, rendering it dysfunctional on Windows. Chrome support manager Ellen T. explains, “Our team has investigated and identified the cause. Some users experience Chrome not running with Family Safety enabled.”

Unlike Firefox or Opera, other browsers remain unaffected. Some users have resorted to renaming Chrome.exe to Chrome1.exe as a workaround. Subscribers to Microsoft 365 with Family Safety enabled can disable the “filter inappropriate websites” option to resume Chrome access, albeit at the risk of unrestricted web access for children.

The timeline for Microsoft addressing this issue remains uncertain, with the problem persisting for over two weeks. Despite attempts to reach out for comment, Microsoft has not responded at the time of publication.

A Chromium engineer noted on June 10th that there has been no communication from Microsoft regarding a fix rollout. While some guidance has been provided to users experiencing issues, its impact is yet to be seen.
