Summary:

  1. Oracle plans to spend $40 billion on Nvidia chips for a new data centre in Texas developed by OpenAI.
  2. The Texas data centre, called Stargate, aims to provide 1.2 gigawatts of computing power, making it one of the largest in the world.
  3. OpenAI is expanding its AI facilities to reduce dependence on Microsoft, with plans for more data centre projects in the US and abroad.

    Article:

In a groundbreaking move, Oracle is set to invest a staggering $40 billion in Nvidia chips to support the development of a cutting-edge data centre in Abilene, Texas. This colossal project, spearheaded by OpenAI, is dubbed the first US “Stargate” data centre and is part of a larger initiative to establish large-scale AI facilities. The Texas site, scheduled for completion next year, is expected to offer a remarkable 1.2 gigawatts of computing power, positioning it among the foremost facilities globally.

The partnership between Oracle and OpenAI entails the acquisition of approximately 400,000 of Nvidia’s latest GB200 chips, renowned for their prowess in training and executing AI models. Oracle plans to lease the computing power generated by these chips to OpenAI, marking a significant advancement in AI computing capabilities.

The Texas data centre, owned by Crusoe and Blue Owl Capital, has attracted substantial financial backing, with $15 billion raised through a combination of debt and equity. Notably, JPMorgan is playing a pivotal role in providing debt financing, with loans totaling $9.6 billion. Construction commenced in June 2024, with the campus set to encompass eight buildings. Oracle has secured a 15-year lease for the site, underscoring the long-term commitment to this transformative project.

Simultaneously, tech mogul Elon Musk is expanding his AI project in Memphis, Tennessee, with aspirations to accommodate approximately 1 million Nvidia chips. Dubbed “Colossus,” Musk’s centre primarily utilizes Nvidia’s earlier H100 and H200 chips, with plans to evolve into the “first gigawatt AI training supercluster.” Amazon is also in the fray, developing a data centre in Virginia that is poised to exceed 1GW in capacity.

The Abilene endeavour signifies a strategic shift for OpenAI, aiming to reduce reliance on Microsoft for cloud computing resources. Following the termination of their exclusive partnership earlier this year, OpenAI is forging ahead with plans to diversify its computing infrastructure. Stargate is expected to play a pivotal role in meeting OpenAI’s burgeoning computing demands, with ambitious fundraising goals set at $500 billion over four years.

Looking ahead, Stargate has garnered significant commitments from key players, with OpenAI and SoftBank pledging $18 billion each. Oracle and MGX, a sovereign wealth fund from Abu Dhabi, have also committed $7 billion apiece to the project. These stakeholders will hold equity in Stargate, with OpenAI and SoftBank taking the lead in steering this transformative initiative. With plans for expansion beyond the US, including a new facility in Abu Dhabi managed by local AI firm G42, Stargate is poised to revolutionize the global AI landscape.
