Protect AI, a Seattle-based startup founded in 2022, is set to be acquired by cybersecurity giant Palo Alto Networks. This move comes as Palo Alto aims to enhance its capabilities in safeguarding the expanding attack surface resulting from the proliferation of AI technologies. The acquisition, whose terms remain undisclosed but is anticipated to be finalized later this year, is projected to further bolster Palo Alto’s position in the cybersecurity sector.

Protect AI, led by CTO Badar Ahmed, President Daryan Dehghanpisheh, and CEO Ian Swanson, has been instrumental in assisting companies in monitoring the intricate layers and components of machine learning systems. The startup has garnered significant attention in the tech industry, having secured a $60 million Series B funding round in 2024, valuing the company at $400 million.

With the rising adoption of AI across various industries, Protect AI’s solutions have become increasingly crucial in helping enterprises secure their AI-driven technologies. Reports indicate that a substantial number of companies experienced AI-related breaches in 2024, underlining the pressing need for robust cybersecurity measures in the AI domain. As a testament to the growing significance of AI security, Morgan Stanley projects that the market for AI-based cybersecurity products is poised to reach $135 billion by 2030.

Founded by former engineering leaders from Amazon and Oracle, Protect AI caters to Fortune 500 companies in sectors such as finance, healthcare, and government. The startup’s strategic acquisitions, including Laiyer AI and SydeLabs, have further solidified its position in the market. Currently employing around 120 individuals across Seattle, Berlin, and Bangalore, Protect AI has garnered support from prominent investors like Acrew Capital, Samsung, and Salesforce Ventures.

Ian Swanson, the CEO and co-founder of Protect AI, expressed his gratitude to the team, customers, partners, and investors for their unwavering support in realizing the company’s vision of securing AI technologies. Swanson’s extensive experience in the tech industry, having founded successful ventures like Sometrics and DataScience, positions him as a seasoned leader in the AI security space.

As Protect AI prepares to integrate with Palo Alto Networks post-acquisition, the cybersecurity landscape in the Pacific Northwest continues to thrive with the presence of innovative startups like Chainguard, Dropzone AI, and Oleria. The consolidation of expertise and resources between Protect AI and Palo Alto Networks signifies a significant step towards fortifying AI security measures in an era defined by technological advancements.
