Blog Summary:
1. Leading AI chatbots are echoing Chinese Communist Party propaganda and censorship when asked about sensitive topics.
2. The American Security Project found that AI models from companies like Google, Microsoft, and OpenAI can generate responses aligned with the CCP’s narratives due to contaminated training data.
3. The report highlights how AI chatbots respond differently in English and Chinese on controversial topics like the origins of COVID-19 and the Tiananmen Square Massacre.

AI Chatbots Reproducing Chinese Communist Party Propaganda, Study Finds

A recent investigation by the American Security Project (ASP) has uncovered concerning findings about leading AI chatbots, revealing that they are reproducing Chinese Communist Party (CCP) propaganda and censorship when questioned on sensitive topics. This revelation sheds light on how the CCP’s extensive censorship and disinformation efforts have infiltrated the global AI data market, impacting AI models from prominent companies such as Google, Microsoft, and OpenAI.

Contaminated Training Data Leading to Biased Responses

The ASP researchers analyzed five popular large language model (LLM) powered chatbots, including OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Microsoft’s Copilot, Google’s Gemini, DeepSeek’s R1, and xAI’s Grok. They found that each AI chatbot sometimes returned responses indicative of CCP-aligned censorship and bias, with Microsoft’s Copilot standing out as more likely to present CCP propaganda as authoritative.

The root of the issue lies in the vast datasets used to train these AI models. LLMs learn from a massive corpus of information available online, where the CCP actively manipulates public opinion through tactics like “astroturfing.” This manipulation results in a significant volume of CCP disinformation being ingested by AI systems daily, requiring continuous intervention from developers to ensure balanced and truthful outputs.

Divergent Responses in English and Chinese

The investigation revealed significant discrepancies in how AI chatbots responded depending on the language of the prompt. For example, when asked about the origins of the COVID-19 pandemic in English, some models acknowledged the possibility of an accidental lab leak from the Wuhan Institute of Virology, while others gave more ambiguous answers. However, in Chinese, the narrative shifted dramatically, with all LLMs describing the pandemic’s origin as an “unsolved mystery” or a “natural spillover event.”

Similar divergences were observed on sensitive topics like Hong Kong’s freedoms and the Tiananmen Square Massacre, highlighting how AI chatbots provide different responses based on the language of the prompt. This raises concerns about the alignment of AI models with CCP narratives and the potential implications for democratic institutions and national security.

Urgent Need for Reliable AI Training Data

The ASP report emphasizes the urgent necessity of expanding access to reliable and verifiably true AI training data to prevent the proliferation of CCP propaganda in AI systems. The authors caution that developers in the West may struggle to prevent the potentially devastating effects of global AI misalignment if access to factual information continues to diminish.

As the debate around AI ethics and transparency continues, it is crucial for companies and developers to address these issues and ensure that AI systems remain impartial and aligned with factual information.
