Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix have inked preliminary deals to provide chips and equipment for OpenAI’s Stargate initiative. This collaboration solidifies their position as leaders in advanced memory chips for artificial intelligence applications.

OpenAI, headed by Sam Altman, has signed a letter of intent to engage South Korea’s top two corporations in constructing data centers for Stargate. This project involves major players in AI, such as Nvidia and Oracle, with projected demand reaching 900,000 wafers per month as Stargate expands globally.

The anticipated demand for HBM surpasses current global capacity, highlighting Stargate’s significant impact on global AI development. Altman’s next stop is Taipei to meet with key AI players like Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company and Hon Hai Precision Industry.

The agreement signed in Seoul aims to foster a long-term partnership between OpenAI and the leading Asian companies in memory chip production. Together, they will assist Seoul in developing a domestic AI ecosystem, reflecting a growing trend among governments to leverage AI technology.

Nvidia recently announced a substantial investment in OpenAI to support infrastructure for new data centers, emphasizing the rising demand for AI services like ChatGPT. SK Hynix leads in supplying HBM for Nvidia’s AI accelerators, while Samsung is also positioning itself as a key supplier in this space.

Various Samsung group entities, including Samsung SDS and Samsung Heavy Industries, will collaborate with OpenAI to explore future technologies like floating data centers and data center design. Additionally, SK Telecom and OpenAI will co-develop a dedicated data center in South Korea.
