The Serious Fraud Office Investigates Bribery Allegations in Construction Industry

The Serious Fraud Office (SFO) has recently made significant progress in an investigation involving bribery within the construction industry. The SFO has conducted three arrests and conducted searches at various properties in England and Monaco as part of this ongoing probe. The focus of the investigation revolves around allegations of bribes being paid by a construction firm to secure a contract for assisting in the construction of a data center for tech giant, Microsoft Corporation.

Former associates of Mace Group, a renowned London-based construction company, and infrastructure firm Blu-3, are at the center of the SFO’s inquiry. It has been alleged that individuals associated with Blu-3 facilitated payments exceeding £3 million ($4 million) in bribes to Mace associates to secure contracts related to the construction of the data center in the Netherlands.

In a recent development, over 70 SFO personnel conducted searches at four residential properties and one commercial establishment spanning across London, Kent, Surrey, and Somerset. The objective of these searches was to gather crucial evidence related to the alleged bribery scheme, as stated by the SFO.

Nick Ephgrave, Director of the SFO, emphasized the detrimental impact of bribery on financial markets and reiterated the agency’s commitment to combatting corruption both domestically and internationally. He stated, “Paying bribes to do business undermines our financial markets. Today’s action is a reminder that we will take rapid and robust action to tackle suspected bribery and corruption wherever it appears – at home and overseas.”

Blu-3 has pledged full cooperation with the SFO’s investigation and affirmed their commitment to upholding the highest ethical standards. The company stated, “Blu-3 is supporting an external SFO investigation and is fully cooperating with the agency. We take matters of this nature extremely seriously and are committed to upholding the highest standards.”

It is noteworthy that Blu-3 and Mace Group have previously collaborated on significant projects, such as the construction of the Shard skyscraper in 2009, according to Blu-3’s official website.

Responding to the allegations, a spokesperson for Mace Group emphasized the company’s zero-tolerance policy towards bribery. The spokesperson stated, “Mace takes any allegations of bribery extremely seriously. We are committed to fully supporting the Serious Fraud Office in investigating allegations against any former associates of the group.”

It is important to note that Microsoft Corporation has not been implicated as a target of the SFO’s investigation in this case.
