The Federal Communications Commission has granted SpaceX permission to launch an additional 7,500 second-generation Starlink satellites, bringing the total to 15,000 satellites worldwide. This decision will not only expand SpaceX’s high-speed internet coverage but also allow Starlink satellites to operate across five frequencies and provide direct-to-cell connectivity outside the United States, as well as supplemental coverage within the U.S.

Reuters reported that SpaceX had initially requested approval for an additional 15,000 satellites, but the FCC has decided to defer authorization for the remaining 14,988 proposed Gen2 Starlink satellites.

According to the FCC, SpaceX is required to launch 50% of the approved Starlink satellites by December 1, 2028, and the remaining 50% by December 2031.
