Waymo has made a significant move by removing human safety drivers from its autonomous test vehicles in Nashville, signaling a step closer to launching a robotaxi service in the city. This development comes as Waymo, an Alphabet-owned company, has been conducting tests in Nashville for several months and is set to introduce a robotaxi service in partnership with Lyft later this year.

Waymo’s expansion into the robotaxi market is gaining momentum, with commercial services already operational in various cities such as Atlanta, Austin, Los Angeles, Miami, the San Francisco Bay Area, and Phoenix. In addition to these locations, Waymo also has driverless test fleets in Dallas, Houston, San Antonio, and Orlando.

The company follows a consistent strategy when entering new markets, starting with a small fleet of manually driven vehicles to map the city. Subsequently, autonomous vehicles undergo testing with a human safety operator present in the driver’s seat. As the testing progresses, Waymo transitions to driverless testing, often allowing employees to request rides, before officially launching a robotaxi service.
